Jeanne M. Rasmussen collection, 1889, 1922-1986.

Manuscript and photographic material, dating from 1922 to 1986. One item is dated 1889. The collection contains personal correspondence and financial records; drafts of chapters from Rasmussen's unpublished manuscript on coal mining; essays written by Rasmussen on coal mining and other topics relating to Appalachia; and clippings and scrapbook materials on coal mining, the United Mine Workers of America, and Rasmussen's writing and photography. The photographs depict Appalachian men, women, and children; coal mining disasters, the Buffalo Creek (W. Va.) flood of 1972; and strip mining.

Journalist, photographer, and free-lance writer who became involved with coal mining issues after moving to Beckley, W. Va., in the 1960s with her husband, Dr. Donald Rasmussen, a pulmonary specialist who devoted much of his practice to treating miners with black lung disease. Many of Jeanne Rasmussen's writings and photographs dealt with coal miners and with Appalachian life and were published in books and periodicals.
